Post 198: Holy Ones, Big Dipper, sparklers, shrimpers, night sky

The Real Reason Shrimpers Go Out

tonight the big dipper was leaning on the horizon
like a man on a lamppost
handle reaching down
mixing with the light
of one boat

the other shrimpers
their boats lined along the night edge
were watching
awed, a bit jealous, I supposed…
diesel engines puttering away
deeper into the vastness

then last night
a thousand miles out
behind cosmic storm clouds
the Holy Ones were twirling
giant lightening sparklers

well past midnight they played
striking fire from one cloud to another
even when I left for bed
on into the early morning
on my dark walls
the lights flashed

RED
I am thinking/feeling red this morning, as I am most every day, with our warm fire last night, the passion of this November morning in Maine, my strawberry and blueberry shake, the blood vessels pumping, a tiny miracle among a miraculous universal nest constructed of miracles.
My wish is for the burdened and hopeless to begin to have the space to feel the miracles nesting around us.

SHELL SPEAK
Moving Toward Abstraction and Awareness
What hidden force moves us to choose certain shells on the beach?
What shells speak to us more than others… the perfect or the imperfect? the colors or the textures? the smooth hard coolness that feels like, and is, the same make up as our own bones?

Then, how to go deeper with this message from the shells? Do we write a poem of the beauty, of the mystery, of the journey of the creatures that inhabited these homes for a time? And wonder and marvel at the connection with the universe?

Sculpture by Carol Bass

Energy Bundle 001, 4.5′ x 5′ acrylic and oil on baltic birch, private collection

I play with and arrange shapes and forms like a giant cut and paste project but in 3D, like jig saw pieces on steroids. The forms and colors of previous canvases catch my eye, saying “please, its time for me to jump off this flat plane. I wish to be known as a sculpture today. ” So this is a process of something becoming, really, of a birth. Maybe one day a very large free standing sculpture will begin to emerge.

Sculpture by Carol

This is a detail of a commissioned piece for a very genuine and delightful couple from Virginia for their home on Sebago Lake in Maine. They enjoy their autumn swims in the lake and the energy around their conversations was something I wanted to capture with this piece.

Energy Kiss

An “Energy Kiss” is what I call these small, 12” x 12” 3D studies. It’s another way of playing and planning a very large work, while testing the effect that one color has next to another color and feeling the resulting energy. The composition is re-arranged ‘til it pleases me. Then comes the question of color, and next comes the energy from the color. And this is when the fun happens.
