SKINNY LITTLE GIRL

tip-toeing by the bath
with a small dirt box full of worms
I passed Daddy shaving paths
through his creamy cheeks

running through smells of
Old Spice
old bacon

bursting free to the morning
of the backyard
with a curly wiggler
to stick way up in the rusty exhaust pipe
of his BLACK BUICK

hiding in the crepe myrtles
watching Daddy walk out
starch collared
soapy eared
revving the engine
and shooting that crawler
out ‘cross the dirt drive

Daddy never knew he was so rich
that worm
that child
that laughter
