WHEN WOODY BELCHES

You are quite suddenly connected to every other living thing
in case you weren’t already
the elephants, the cows, your old Uncle Hiram
of course the bullfrogs
and Mildred Jones who lives up the street

He does it with the gusto of life
in the morning with his bagels
in the evening after supper
and you think of Mark Antony
and Mahalia Jackson

the juncture of all animals that are
and ever have been
later he puts his head in your lap
while you sit on the floor
snuggling deep into your breasts
touching your heart
and you know
everything is one
