POST 180: How Many Screams does it take

by Carol Bass

How many can you slap on bare arms and legs
in the back yard in the last ray of sun
in the wet green dusk
how many times does the brown dog
bark when the neighbor
that wishes you, with your
annoying happiness would drown

walking her cute beagles
who know nothing of their owner’s strangeness
she does feed them

how many times can we see a photo of a father from Burma
his primal scream
fearing the deepest fear
no freedom, no home, nothing to give his children
scared of a death after no life
how do we survive our stress?

we count our garage doors, boats
as his moans vibrate
with the mosquitos in our garden

we cry the night hours
manage our breathing
open our hearts to the wind
hoping that God knows
