POST 168: river, snakes, chiggers, willow, Edisto, South Carolina, Maine, low country

by Carol Bass

PADDLING THE EDISTO

meeting myself and
the dreamscapes where we were formed
from that other world
so sweet
we thought perilous many times
chiggers, snakes
children, friends holding hands
so many animals along the bank
skipping to catch up
while we softly rowed

Slinking, plopping off logs
with the turtles
sinking down in the black water
to sandy bottom

breaking the end of a willow branch
to use for a fan
feeling, following a gesture, a route
made by many before
knowing it

slowly, surely meeting
the other end of
a widening full circle
