POST 139: Cornfield, Blackbirds, Sea, South Carolina, Maine

TWELVE HUNDRED RED WINGED BLACKBIRDS

For the last week
the performance has been
in this cornfield by the sea
a dinnertime rising and falling
exquisite dance by a
massive combine
of black breathing wings

mowing over the dirt
for golden kernels
winged drum rolls
rising and falling
ruby splotches
flicked all over
their hungry black cloud
