POST 134: Cactus plums, beach, racquet ball, LOVE, South Carolina, Home, poem painting

by Carol Bass

CACTUS PLUMS

I love how they huddle down in clumps
in the dry tangled weeds
behind the sea oats
Jazzy jade and rose teams
of beach cactus primed
for an afternoon racquet ball game

Maybe I’ll paint them
Those ripe magenta globes
and their shadows
suspended in mid swing
beside sprawling jungle green
paddle leaves

I wonder about them
and the people I know
Those shadows and tiny spikes
How prickly we handle LOVE
so we can learn about LOVE

I step in real close
choose a pear and twist it from the green
The rich juice seeps out
I peel back the tough skin
finger way down into the heart
and remember my own heart
