POST 125: Sunset at Madeline Point, West Wind/winter solstice/Maine/South Carolina

by Carol Bass

DUSK TONIGHT

Ten thousand splashing elephants
in the grey frigid water,
down at Madeline Point tonight
drowning

Screeching in a stampede swim
terrorized and tossing
in such a foamy brawl
with the west wind

that the flaming
freezing clouds
raced away to hide
on the other side of the heavens

leaving me forlorn, yet calmer.
I knew this ominous beauty
was a gift to me

as Rumi knew,
so I befriended
the weird wild darkness
