POST 119: Holiday Guests, tomato pie, eagles, hawks, vultures

by Carol Bass

The Guests with Their Tents

Tomato pie warming up
just in case we need more appetizers
melted pimento cheese crackers
oysters on the half shell

Ruby bringing in her grits casserole
Terry taking mint julep orders
Mama’s ambrosia

all guests have arrived
except Marvetta
she still singing in the choir

Lord thank you for the eagles and hawks,
even those black vultures
we saw on the way to Mimi’s house

Spoon bread, deviled crabs
crispy chicken livers
mushroom rice and deviled eggs
are you hungry yet?

More kissing in the pantry
like the very first time
sing it John Waite
fill up my wine
this train is headed home
